| CincyMensa | This is the e-group for Cincinnati Area Mensa (CAM). This group is intended to be an on-line communication tool, to be used to notify members of upcoming events, changes to events or items of interest to the membership at large. If you have information - or a question - that pertains to CAM, feel free to post it here. Please note that the purpose of the group is two fold: to provide a forum for announcements and notices from Ex Comm and to allow for discussion and announcements from the membership at large. All Ex Comm emails will come to the group flagged as a Special Notice. Group members who wish to avoid the discussion are encouraged to choose "Special Notices Only" as their email delivery option. Because this is the official list for the membership, it is not intended for controversial topics. Those who are interested in more intense conversations are encouraged to join CAM Soapbox, a privately run list. Post message: CincyMensa AT yahoogroups.com |

Team hosted by Paulette Wilson.
OH-K Chorale - Team Captain, Rob McDonough. Team members; Candi Bower, Rebecca Cornett,
and Peggy Stapleton. Team hosted by Rob McDonough.
Cincinnati Dead-Enders - Team Captain, John Cunningham. Team members: Robert Charlton, Susan Kight, Dave Lennig, Margaret Maddox. Alternates:
Debbi Brown and Bob Fitzgerald.
Team hosted by Susan Kight.
And, the CQ race is on! Let's all bring in some money for the Scholarship fund! I hope we can get together the evening of CQXVI and
schmooze and review. Heretofore, the team has gone to La Rosa's or another pizza parlor and
discussed the test. The official version of which is already sealed for mailing to AML. Good luck to all the teams and thank you for volunteering
your time and efforts.

http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/ is a new website intended for math/logic loving students. The site is managed by two former top performers in various national math competitions, including MATHCOUNTS and the USAMO. Membership in the community is free - "Many avid students have a difficult time finding a community of peers with whom to share their joy of discovery and thirst for learning. Through the Art of Problem Solving Community, we hope to provide a place for those students to congregate and provide each other the valuable sources of learning, support, and excitement that will inspire and encourage the students to learn more."
The American Boys Handy Book and the American Girls Handy Book, two books very popular in the early 1900s, have been reprinted (and you can usually find them at a local Barnes & Noble store). They contain hundreds of nifty outdoor projects! No, they are not politically correct and yes, they are OLD, but they contain information on making a wide variety of interesting things and have lots of ideas for old-fashioned fun things to do. A search on Amazon.com will yield a list of contents for the boy's version if you want more information.
I received my fall Chinaberry catalog yesterday so I thought I would share this resource. I have found some wonderful books here and they also sell audio tapes, craft kits and toys (among other things). This month they have THE TINGLER - a wonderful scalp massager that I first learned about at a Mensa RG! "Recognizing that conscious parenting is the most important and challenging responsibility that many of us will have, Chinaberry offers items to support families in raising their children with love, honesty and joy to be reverent, loving caretakers of each other and of the earth." http://www.chinaberry.com/ 1-800-776-2242
For those who love to color - this site has blank coloring pages of famous art works. At the bottom of the page are links to other coloring pages - one of dragons (mostly drawn by kids) and the other 2 link to pages of medallions - neat looking motifs, some with complicated geometric forms. All to be colored! The site is French - http://www.momes.net/coloriages/
This is a cool site for beginning readers - and it is free. "The Starfall learn-to-read program was created to meet the needs of the emergent reader by incorporating rhyming games and high-interest books that teach phonemic awareness (sounds in words), phonics, decoding skills, and comprehension. The program is designed to instill confidence and enable the child to proceed as quickly as possible to a balanced reading program." http://www.starfall.com/

½ cup Crisco
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
2 squares melted unsweetened
chocolate (1-ounce squares)
½ cup sifted flour
optional: ½ cup chocolate chips
or ½ cup nuts
Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together. Add eggs, beating only until blended. Add melted chocolate, flour and chocolate chips or nuts. Pour into a greased 8-inch square pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
In honor of October it would be fun to bake the brownies in a 9-inch round cake pan instead of the 8" square pan. Ice with orange tinted buttercream frosting. Use piped tinted icing, chocolate chips, gum drops, licorice, cinnamon candies,... to make a stem and face. Alternatively, swirl up the surface of the icing and add shaved chocolate pieces.

Here it is September (or it will be by the time you see this), and some of us are lucky enough to have a garden (or have a friend with a garden) and are looking for ways to use zucchini. This recipe makes one loaf to eat and one to share.
Wash, peel, remove seeds, shred and measure zucchini. Nuts are optional.
Mix 3 eggs and 1 cup of oil
Add 2 cups of sugar
2 cups of shredded zucchini
Mix in ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon vanilla
½ teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
Add 3½ cups of all-purpose flour
Stir in 2 cups of raisins
Stir in 1 cup of chopped nuts (pecans)
Mix well. Divide up into two extra well-greased loaf pans.
Bake in 350-degree oven for 75 minutes.
Reduce oven to 325 degrees for the last 15 minutes.
Leave the bread in the pans for 10 minutes.
Cool on racks. Can be frozen.

Cincinnati's Culture Quest team placed eighth this year, our fourth year straight to earn money for the Cincinnati Area Mensa Scholarship fund. This year, our prize was $130.
The team composition was identical to the 2001 team: Barry Austern, Richard Hildebrand, Rosann O'Rielly, John Schneder and Paulette Wilson, with alternates Richard Magnus and Peggy Stapleton.

For the third time in three years, Cincinnati's Culture Quest team has placed "in the money". We haven't made a lot of money but, by placing in the top 20 (of approximately 90 teams) we have exceeded entry fees. Every year, we have been able to send money to the CAM Scholarship fund. Come the New Year, we will again assemble a team and I look forward to having more than one winning adult team and, possibly, a Junior team.
Winning team members were: Barry Austern, Richard Hildebrand, Rosann O'Rielly, John Schneder and Paulette Wilson, with alternates Richard Magnus and Peggy Stapleton.
