Last month, we reported that a member of our Mensa family, Richard Froelicher, had died. This month, I regretfully report that a member of a member's "real" family has died. Mary Cunningham, mother of Mensan John Cunningham, died in her 90th year. Many of us knew Mrs. Cunningham through hearing her on the radio with John's brother, Bill, and appreciate what a fine person she was. We offer our deepest sympathy to John and his family.
And, yes, to many of us Mensa is a second family. We find people who accept us as the intelligent people we are, with whom we can hold intelligent conversations, and who understand our jokes and cultural references.
Do you like to travel? Would you like to vicariously travel to India and Nepal? Our March Monthly Gathering, hosted by Mike Eilers and Jill Sweeney will have a program that allows you to do just that - see details in the activities listings.
We have two missing members. If anyone knows how to contact John Bennett or Sean Sullivan, please let us know. We'd love to get them the Mencinnatian and Mensa Bulletin, but the addresses we have are no longer useable.
At this time of year, it may seem that I obsess on reminding members to renew. Well, this is my column for the March issue of the Mencinnatian, and the membership year expires at the end of March - so this is your last warning to renew on time. To those of you who have already renewed, and those of you whose memberships don't expire this year - thank you! (And you can skip the rest of this column without missing much.)
If you're not sure if you need to renew, check the mailing label on the back of this Mencinnatian. The line above your name has three numbers - your membership number, your expiration year, and our local group identifier (03-452); if you see "2008," you hadn't renewed as of the end of January, and, unless you've renewed since the labels were printed, you need to renew.
How to renew? You can mail a check to the national office (the address is right above the mailing label); write your membership number on the check or cut out and enclose the mailing label. Or you can renew online, with your membership number (from the mailing label), a credit card, and your membership login password; the link follows this column. If you have questions, or want help, or want a new renewal packet, you can call the National Office at 800-66-Mensa (800-666-3672), and choose menu options 3, 2, & 2 to talk to the membership service department.
You can renew for 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years, or buy a life membership. In January, 57 members renewed for 1 year, 6 for 3 years, and 2 bought life memberships. It costs $52 to renew for one year, with discounts available for multi-year memberships; life memberships have actuarially determined amounts based on your age at the time they're bought.
