Hmmm...

July 2006

Good Day, fellow Mensans!  I am sitting at my computer, enjoying the first evening of a week's vacation.  And it is a vacation in every sense of the word; not only am I off work, but all three of my children are gone for the week as well.  This is a first for me, but I will try not to sound too terribly overjoyed, so as not to insult my daughters (sorry girls - not sure I can do it!). I confess that it does feel quite strange to be alone in the house - creepy even.

On a more pertinent (and less bizarre) note, I would like to briefly mention my column from last month.  I sincerely hope that, if nothing else, it spurred some of you (maybe more than just a few?) to take a look at CAM and your role in it.  Do you have some skill that you could contribute?  Have you considered volunteering?  And just to be clear, I would love to hear from more of you with any input you may have for ways to improve CAM.  What do you think?

The June Ex Comm meeting was held last week and one of our charges for this meeting was to appoint an Election Committee.  What this means is that we are gearing up for the fall election and will be seeking ballots from interested candidates in the coming months.  Could this be you?  The meetings are once a month and usually last about an hour.  The responsibility is not terribly overwhelming but the reward is great - Mensa is a fine organization.  I hope that you will consider running for office.

OK, enough trolling for volunteers!  Moving forward to July, I hope that you are thinking about attending the AG this year.  It is being held in Orlando (yes, on Disney property).  Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend (it is just not in the budget) and I am truly sorry for that - I think it will be a great celebration of Mensa.  It is an international event (actually, it is officially the World Gathering or WG) and will be something to behold, I am sure.  Perhaps some of you will share your experiences when you return?  If you would like more information about the 2006 WG, you can go to the national website (http://www.us.mensa.org).

Whether or not you go to the AG, I also hope that you will consider the Columbus RG the weekend of July 7-9.  It is a fine Region 3 event, part of the RG Junkie's circuit, and is known for it fine array of tournaments and a kids' track.  A registration form is available on the Columbus Area Mensa website (http://columbus.us.mensa.org) - the prices are quite reasonable.  My daughters and I will be there, either in the pool or the Games room, more than likely.  We would love to see more Cincinnati members present!

And now I am afraid I must be off to more important things, like figuring out which truly decadent (and probably illegal), adults-only activity I will pursue first.  Cleaning out the bathroom closet will probably win, despite intense competition from the kitchen drawers and the mound of laundry in the basement.  How I will ever hide my true nature from my children, I do not know. I would much rather they envision me bar-hopping and dancing into the wee hours of the night.  I guess I will have to throw some things on the floor before they return so they will have no idea how I really spent my vacation. Please, if you run into them in public in the next month or so, don't let the cat out of the bag!
